Registration number for a tourist rental: what changed in May 2026

What changed on 20 May 2026

Until now, registering a furnished tourist rental only applied in certain towns. Since 20 May 2026, declaration is compulsory across France: every owner who lets a furnished property to short-stay guests must register it and obtain a registration number.

Who is concerned?

All hosts of furnished tourist rentals, whether it is a second home or your main residence. A furnished tourist rental is a furnished property let by the night, week or month to passing guests who do not make it their home.

How to do it

  1. Declare the property online on the national online service: the host’s identity, the address and features of the property, main or second home, and the supporting documents requested.
  2. Receive your number: an electronic acknowledgement is issued, with your declaration number.
  3. Display the number on every listing (Airbnb, Booking, Abritel, your own website…) and pass it on to the platforms.

Apartment buildings: do not forget this

If the property is in a co-owned building, tell your managing agent (syndic). The building’s rules may also allow or forbid tourist lets, so read them before you start.

What you risk if you forget

Municipalities can impose administrative fines: up to €10,000 for failing to register, and up to €20,000 for a false declaration or a false number (maximum amounts). Platforms must also check that the number is present and may remove or suspend a non-compliant listing, so a property without a number may vanish from search results in the middle of the season.

Our advice

  • If your town had already given you a number, ask whether it remains valid or must be renewed through the national online service.
  • Keep the acknowledgement with your rental documents.
  • Check that the number appears on all your listings, including the oldest ones.
